Dai Dreaming

Dai Dreaming

IN A PART OF THE WORLD WE NOW CALL WALES
DAI WAS DREAMING ADVENTUROUS TALES
HE SAT IN HIS CAVE ON HIS SPECIAL CHAIR
A CHAIR THAT ROCKED FROM HERE TO THERE
AS IT ROCKED IT MADE DAI SLEEP
AND INTO HIS MIND STRANGE THINGS WOULD CREEP
EACH TIME HE SLEPT HIS MIND WOULD RACE
TO FIND HIM IN SOME FAR OFF PLACE
A TIME IN HISTORY STILL UNPLANNED
OR ROAMING IN A DISTANT LAND
ONE DAY DAI WOKE FROM A HARD NIGHT’S DREAM
HE COULDN’T REMEMBER QUITE WHERE HE’D BEEN
BECAUSE HE WAS HUNGRY HIS DREAM HAD BEEN LOST
SO DAI WENT OUT IN THE COLD AND THE FROST
HE WANDERED DOWN TOWARDS THE LAKE
BY NOW HIS STOMACH HAD STARTED TO ACHE

DAI AGNOSIS

DAI AGNOSIS

DAI’S HOUSE WAS MADE FROM REEDS AND MUD
CLOSE TO WHERE HE NOW WAS STOOD
HIS TIME WAS SPENT BUILDING BOATS LIKE A DISH
MORE TIME WAS TAKEN TRYING TO FISH

DAI’S HORSE-HAIR TROUSERS RUBBED AND THEY ITCHED
BECAUSE OF THE SMELL THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DITCHED
THE COAT THAT HE WORE WAS AN ANIMAL SKIN
TIED ROUND THE WAIST AND UNDER THE CHIN

DAI JEELING

DAI JEELING

THE FISHERMAN TOPPLED AND FELL WITH A SPLASH
THE TAIL OF THE CROCODILE GAVE A GREAT LASH
THE MAN WENT UNDER AND VANISHED BENEATH
AND DAI JUMPED IN WITH HIS KNIFE IN HIS TEETH
A GREAT DEAL OF SCREAMING AND SHOUTING AND THRASHING
AND DAI GAVE THE CROC A BIT OF A BASHING

DAI GRABBED THE ARMS OF THE MAN WITH NO SOCKS
AND HOISTED HIM SKILLFULLY BACK ON THE ROCKS
THE THREAT OF THE KNIFE FORCED THE CROCODILE BACK
THEN DAI FOUND HIS PADDLE AND GAVE HIM A WHACK
THE THREE OF THEM WATCHED AS THE BEAST SWAM AWAY
AND DAI SAID “ I THINK THAT’S ENOUGH FOR ONE DAY”

DAI HARD

DAI HARD

BY NINE THE NEXT DAY A CROWD HAD ARRIVED
THE MAYOR OF LONDON HAD OFFERED A PRIZE
DAI AND THE ENGLISHMAN SAT IN THEIR BOATS
THE SUN WAS HOT SO THEY TOOK OFF THEIR COATS

THE ENGLISHMAN’S BOAT WAS SLENDER AND SWISH
THE SCOTSMAN SAT IN HIS SMALL TATTY DISH
DAI LIFTED HIS PADDLE AS WIDE AS A PLANK
THE ENGLISHMAN SAW IT AND ALMOST SANK
THE MAYOR RAISED A FLAG AND STARTED THE RACE
THE ENGLISHMAN SHOT OFF AT QUITE A PACE

DAI CORACLE

DAI CORACLE

DAI LIVED IN WALES WAY OUT IN THE WEST
HE HAD AN IDEA HE WAS LONGING TO TEST
HE PLANNED TO PADDLE FROM ENGLAND TO FRANCE
THE SUMMER AHEAD WOULD BE HIS BEST CHANCE

ALL THROUGH THE WINTER HE WENT INTO TRAINING
WITH SNOW ON THE GROUND AND WHEN IT WAS RAINING
HE PUSHED HIMSELF AND HIS BOAT ALL THE WAY
AND NOW HE WAS READY, TODAY WAS THE DAY

DAI - A - TRIBE

DAI - A - TRIBE

DAI WAS SLEEPING ALONE IN THE SHADE
INSIDE A BOAT THAT HE HAD JUST MADE
A SIMPLE STRUCTURE OF STICKS AND HIDE
WITH LEATHER THONGS TO BIND THE INSIDE
THE FUR WAS BUFFALO DARK AND TOUGH
A HAIRY BOAT READY AND ROUGH
THE TAIL COULD BE USED TO PULL OR TO TIE
AND EQUALLY USEFUL FOR SWATTING A FLY

DAI-AL-LOG

DAI-AL-LOG

BY THE RIVER TIGRIS IN ANCIENT IRAQ
DAI WAS LYING FLAT ON HIS BACK
HE OPENED HIS EYES AND STARED AT THE MOON
HIS WORKING DAY WAS DUE TO END SOON
HE LIVED AND WORKED IN OLD BAGHDAD
MAKING BOATS SINCE HE WAS A LAD

THESE BOATS WERE USED SINCE TIME BEGAN
WHEN PERSIA WAS WHAT WE NOW CALL IRAN
WHEN IRAQ WAS THE CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION
THIS BOAT CALLED A GUFFA A LOCAL CREATION
THEY CAN CARRY A DONKEY A COW OR A HORSE
FRUIT AND GRAIN AND PEOPLE OF COURSE

HOLY DAI

HOLY DAI

IN A VALLEY IN IRELAND WAY OUT WEST
DAI WAS WORKING STRIPPED TO HIS VEST
BUILDING A BOAT IN THE AFTERNOON HEAT
DAI WAS TIRED FROM HIS HEAD TO HIS FEET

THE FINISHED BOAT WAS READY TO SHIFT
DAI NEEDED HELP TO GIVE IT A LIFT
A DOZEN PEOPLE OR MAYBE MORE
HELPED TO CARRY IT DOWN TO THE SHORE

DAI LEMMA

DAI LEMMA

DAI LIVED UP IN A LAND CALLED TIBET
IT’S COLD AND WINDY AND SOMETIMES IT’S WET
WITH MIGHTY MOUNTAIN PEAKS ALL AROUND
LITTLE GROWS ON THE COLD STONY GROUND

THE ANIMAL VITAL TO ALL IS THE YAK
LOOKS LIKE A COW WITH A BIG HAIRY BACK
THE YAK HAS A USE FROM THE HEAD TO THE FEET
FOR MILK AND BUTTER FOR ROPE AND FOR MEAT
WITH WOOL FOR CLOTHING AND HORNS FOR TOOLS
THE TAIL FOR ROPE AND DUNG FOR FUEL
YES EVEN YAK POO FOUND IN A HEAP
IS DRIED ON THE WALLS THEN BURNT FOR HEAT

DAI VERTED & his brother CON

DAI VERTED & his brother CON

I HAVE A BROTHER CALLED DAI
WHO OFTEN GIVES FISHING A TRY
HE’S KNOWN AS DAI VERTED
AND I’M CALLED CONVERTED
BUT NOBODY REALLY KNOWS WHY

THE BROTHERS CLIMBED INTO THEIR CRAFT
DAI IN THE BOW AND CON IN THE AFT
THE BOW IS THE FRONT WHERE DAI HAS TO KNEEL
IN A BOAT WITH NO RUDDER OR EVEN A KEEL
THE AFT IS USUALLY KNOWN AS THE REAR
WHERE CON KEEPS HIS NET AND HIS FISHING GEAR

DAI AGONAL

DAI AGONAL

IN A SWANSEA VALLEY NEAR THE MOUNTAINS AND MOORS
DAI AND HIS BROTHER WERE STOOD OUT OF DOORS
LOOKING ACROSS THE FIELDS OF THEIR FARM
TO THE LAKE AT THE BOTTOM ALL PEACEFUL AND CALM

NINETEEN HUNDRED AND TWELVE WAS THE YEAR
DAI AND HIS BROTHER SAT DOWN FOR A BEER
ACROSS THE OCEAN A SHIP CALLED TITANIC
HAD SUNK IN THE ICE IN THE NORTHERN ATLANTIC
SCOTT AND HIS TEAM HAD MANFULLY TRIED
TO REACH THE SOUTH POLE BUT ALL THERE HAD DIED

DAI HAD A PLAN WHICH WAS FAR LESS DRAMATIC
HE HAD A QUICK SEARCH AROUND IN HIS ATTIC

DAI NAMIC

DAI NAMIC

DAI GATHERED ALL HE COULD FROM HIS HOME FILLED UP HIS BOAT AND SET OFF ALONE HE PADDLED AWAY AT DEAD OF NIGHT AND KEPT ON GOING UNTIL IT GOT LIGHT

HE WASN’T QUITE SURE WHICH WAY WAS BEST KEEP GOING EAST, BUT NOT NORTH OR WEST THE TIDES TOOK HIM FAR OUT ONTO THE OCEAN WHERE HE WOULD END UP HE HADN’T A NOTION
